Why is personal development important in education business?

It’s the Christmas break and schools are closed for business. Teachers also don’t want to hear from you right now. So, what can you do in order to help your business grow right now? Might I be so bold as to suggest take some time for yourself? Personal development matters in education and in growing your business. It’s a topic I am passionate about and one I will more than likely cover more than once. But for now, I’ll cover the basics and let you make up your own mind.

What is personal development?

Personal development is the pursuit of personal growth. When I talk about personal development, I don’t just mean about gaining and developing skills. It’s easy to think of it as simply developing skills – these are visible and external. I am talking about improving the self – the inner you – working on your brain and your soul. Looking within is not easy and it can really push people out of their comfort zone (which is not the bad thing people think it is).

I started my pursuit way too late! I didn’t know who I was, but I had a 4-month-old baby, staff, and a business to nurture! Better late than never though – I started nearly five years ago, and I have changed so much since then. I’ve changed my beliefs, my leadership style, the way I interact with people, what I hold myself accountable for, even my mindset (mindset is a hard one that I am always working on, but I’ll cover that more in another post).

You need to grow for your business to grow!

Why is it suddenly popular?

If we look at society now, there’s been a massive shift in attitudes towards mental health and the importance of taking care of it, people are more interested in understanding themselves and seeing themselves as able to change. Furthermore, people are more willing to seek help to do that, whether that is help with a therapist, a counsellor, a coach, or a mentor. And with the growth in social media, these professionals can pump out valuable content for this new and curious audience to peruse at their leisure.

The days where the words ‘self-help book’ had connotations of a person being helpless for most people are over. There’s something empowering about learning about yourself, and more and more people are realising this.

Why is personal development important in education business?

When I started teaching in 2006, I thought personal development was more for people who were a bit lost on their journey and perhaps weren’t good at taking action to help themselves. However, on my journey from the classroom to entrepreneurship I have realised that potential is intrinsically liked to personal development. As entrepreneurs, we must learn about ourselves and be able to reflect – if we don’t, we will get stuck and be unable to move forward.

We must reflect on so much to grow. We have to consider why we react to things in a certain way; why we have certain habits and how to create new ones; how our feelings impact our daily lives and even our decision making and how much of all this is based on our past experiences.

As a starting point, you could sit down and journal about some big questions. Maybe consider what you want out of your life or reflect on a significant event and what you learned from that. Really ask yourself those uncomfortable questions and reflect – it will really help you grow and that’ll help your business grow too.
