How does my teacher mindset affect my education business?

So, you’ve left the classroom and started your business. You might be thinking that you have many skills from teaching that you can transfer into your business, and you would be correct in that. You have loads of great skills, but something that might hold you back is your ‘teacher mindset’. You might not agree with me there, but I would say you haven’t really had a reason to question it yet.

Let me cover some points and see if any of them resonate with you.

Have you actually let teaching go yet?

Most of us who leave teaching to start a business, leave under some of the worst circumstances. You might have felt pushed out, burned out, stressed out. Most of us reach a point where we can no longer cope teaching and that comes with its own baggage. It is easy to play the blame game and, if you’re not careful, you’ll end up blaming yourself.

Those feelings can become heavy to carry around and will impact you in all areas of your life. So, you need to draw a line under this part of your life and move on. You are not a teacher anymore. You are a business owner. This is, of course, easier said than done. But it’s time now to start putting in the hard work.

How are you coping with the difference in routine?

I am a creature of routine. Nowadays, I like to mix up my routine once it becomes stale to me, but I like to have a routine and be in control of it.

Teaching came with routine. Rules that governed my actions on a day-to-day basis and once that was gone, I was quite lost. I would have unstructured days and get absolutely nothing done or I would do things that weren’t right for my business at the time so I could say I was putting in the hours.

These days I trust my gut more, acting on my inspiration when I can. I don’t feel guilty for taking time out when I can feel myself not being productive. But I wish I’d worked on it a lot sooner. It’s important to realise that you are in control of the structure of your days, and you can CHOOSE how you spend them. So, if you work better in an afternoon, don’t feel guilty about having a lie in! It is one of the perks of being your own boss.

Are you thinking big enough and believing in what is possible?

When you work in a school there is always a sense of judgement. You are judged on the quality of your teaching, parents make judgements about you, there’s just a huge culture of judgement. And this can impact on your mindset massively. It might have squashed what you believe you are capable of.

But if you want big things for your company, you have to believe you can have them! Because you can! You need to be open to possibility, not scared of it.

You can have more income, you can work less, you can pass the tasks you hate onto others, you can grow your business! Don’t let the opinion and judgement of others hold you back.

The mindset piece is huge, and it is a constant work in progress. If you’ve been on this journey with me a while, you’ll know it is still something I work on. If you want more advice on how you can change your mindset, reach out to me via our socials.
