How do I market my education business without any marketing experience?

Marketing can be a hard task, especially if you don’t have any experience in the area! But you don’t need to have a degree in marketing to be able to do it successfully. There are courses out there that you can take – they might range from a few hours to a few days but they’re certainly less commitment than a 3-year course plus the financial cost of university!

I’m not here to sell courses to you, I would suggest you look into those at some point though, I’m here to give you two important steps that will help you develop your own school of marketing for your education business, and best of all, they’re totally free! So, what can you do right now to develop your marketing skills?

Take stock

What do you already know? If you sit down and think about it, you’ll probably know more than you realise. What have you already done in terms of marketing for your education business? Think about the emails you may have sent, how you’ve reached out to schools, content you’ve posted on social media. What has been successful and why? What has been less successful and the lessons you’ve learned from it?

I’d been telling myself a story that I didn’t know much about marketing, but something happened last summer, and I took stock and realised that I’d already done so much marketing over the last 8 years. Suddenly, I felt like I’d found a box of treasure! I did know something about marketing after all and all the work I had put into it was part of the reason my business had grown so much!

Work on your observation skills

How often do you look at how other businesses are sharing their message? I don’t just mean education businesses by the way; I mean all businesses, any product or service you see or use. How do you respond to their message? Can you identify what it actually is? How do you feel when you receive products or use services? Is the customer journey easy and fun or is it hard and time consuming?

Find someone to share your observations with too! What you see and feel may be different to them and sharing your thoughts can generate some inspiration.

Start taking note of how you feel at any given opportunity. When you’re in a restaurant, is there plenty of choice and variety? How do the staff make your feel? How are choices presented – is it easy to see what the specials are? When you’re filling a form online, is it quick or clunky? All of these observations will help you market your education business.

There you have it, two things you can start doing right now to help you grow your marketing skills to market your education business. If you would like more tips and advice, why not look into joining the Education Business Club:
